Introduction to a Former Baker

Hi! My name is Bailey Ruby and I am 20 years old! I was born in Fort Worth, Texas but my dad’s job has moved our family all across the country! I have lived in Minnesota, South Dakota, Kansas, Iowa, Washington State, and now, again, Texas! My favorite place that I have lived was definitely Washington State. I love the outdoors, and there was always somethingfun to do there; hiking, skiing, swimming, not to mention the scenery was BEAUTIFUL! I have two sisters, Mackenzie who is a year older, and Kennedy, who is a year younger. Both attend Oklahoma State University. I also have a 9-month-old puppy, Hudson, who is a Yorkshire Terrier and Bichon Frise mix.

Choosing to attend the University of Oklahoma was a difficult decision for me. Growing up with two sisters (and being so close in age) really made me want to branch out on my own and go to a school far away from home but, once I saw the OU campus I knew it was the only place for me! I am currently a Health and Exercise Science major (pre-Physical Therapy) with a minor in Psychology. Once I receive my Doctorate in PT, I want to work with military veterans, specifically amputees, or those recovering from injuries received while on active duty. I’m currently volunteering in the PT center at the Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma City, and it is one of the best things I have ever done!

In my free time I LOVE to bake! When I was a little kid, I wanted to open my own bakery but once I found out I had to wake up early as a baker, I changed my mind (I’m so not a morning person)! I also really like traveling although I don’t get to do that very much! This summer however, my best friends and I were able to take a vacation and go to Disney World. We stood in line for every ride, and took pictures with a ton of characters. My number one place I want to visit is Greece. I love Greek mythology so to be able to see the place that those stories stem from would be my dream.

  1. What a wonderful career path, Bailey! And how great that you are working at a Veterans Hospital now so that you can be learning for real what that is all about. And I am excited that this class can be a chance for you to explore Greek mythology! That is a topic in class for Weeks 2 and 3 as you saw already, and you can also do your class project on something Greek. I hope you will have fun next week browsing the Freebookapalooza of free online books for this class: there are so many Greek mythology books in there. Here's a sneak peek: Freebookapalooza: Classical Mythology... enjoy!

  2. Hi Bailey! That is amazing that you have lived in all those states while growing up; I bet that was hard but also exciting. I was not born in Texas but I grew up in Colleyville (thirty minutes out from Dallas). I have a twin sister who also attends Oklahoma State University! Your puppy is so cute. I wanted a puppy but I ended up rescuing my kitty Oliver whom I love so much. You seem very genuine and I am looking forward to getting to know you throughout the semester via your blog. Good luck!

  3. Hi Bailey! I think it is awesome that you have been to so many places. The way you describe Washington State makes me want to visit! Your dog is adorable. I am very impressed with how you want to use your career choice of working with military veterans. My husband is in the Air Force, so I am genuinely grateful for that. I think it would be very fulfilling work. I also agree with you that being able to visit the places that the stories we will be reading come from would be amazing!
I also think we were in Anatomy together last fall with Chanda. Sorry, I know that's a tad creepy, but I thought I recognized you from your picture haha!

  4. Hey Bailey! I am also from Fort Worth...small world! My parents just vacationed in Washington for their anniversary and fell in love. I kept asking what there was to do there and they seriously could not stop telling me about how beautiful it was and how much fun they had there. I am an OT and psychology major so I admire your dedication to school and your future career. My dad's best friend served in Afghanistan and veterans are something very close to my heart as well. I think it is awesome that you want to dedicate your career to helping them and give back to those that have already given so much for us. Oh, and your puppy is so adorable; I would give anything to have my dogs here with me at school!!!

  5. Hi Bailey! First let me say, I'm super jealous you've lived so many places. I'm sure moving a lot is hard (I HATE moving, ha!), but it must be so amazing to experiences so many different places and people. I've always wanted to go to Washington state - I don't know if I could live there because I've heard it's kind of gloomy, but from what I've seen it looks gorgeous.

I really admire your future career. I think it takes a special person with a very big heart to dedicate your life to helping others, especially veterans. :)

Oh, and I definitely feel you on not being a morning person. I hate mornings, it takes me over an hour to feel fully awake once I'm out of bed - coffee doesn't even seem to help!

  6. Hey Bailey!

While I already know you, reading your about me page showed me so many things I didn't know!! I think it is awesome that you use to be a baker. What was your favorite thing to make? I wish some of your skill would rub off on me! I can cook pre-made cookies and thats about it! I think your career choice and what you want to do with it is amazing! Not many people have the compassion to do a job like that! Since you aren't a morning person you should open up the first night bakery! This would be a hit, especially in a college town! Thanks for sharing and I am excited to read more of your stories!!

  7. Bailey,

First, you made a good choice going to University of Oklahoma over Oklahoma State University. I also want to commend you on your career choice, it takes a great kind of person to work with veterans and other people who are recovering from serious injuries. Thanks so much for sharing, good luck with the rest of your semester.

  8. Hi, Bailey. That is really cool that you decided to go to OU and weren't influenced by your sisters. I've never been to Washington State before, but my favorite place has definitely been Alaska. I'm not great at baking, but I love to do it. What has been your favorite thing to make? My favorite thing to bake is just the classic chocolate chip cookies, but that is just because I love them so much.

  9. Hello Bailey, I’m Tisha! I’ve moved all over the place too, is your dad in the Military too? Your passion to work with military veterans is wonderful! I’m so Jealous that you got to live in Washington State, I want to go there so bad! I love to bake too! Have you ever made homemade bread? It’s so delicious and there’s some how-to videos on YouTube that make it so much easier than everyone thinks!

  10. Hi Bailey!! I think it is so incredibly cool that you have traveled all over the place, that is something that I wish I could say. I've only lived in four different places during my long lifetime of 21 years. lol. My dad is often the baker of the family, what is your favorite thing you like to bake? I don't bake all that often. I wish I had more time to do so! So good to meet you, looking forward to reading your stories!

  11. Hello, Bailey! Living in different places and going to Disney World sound like so much fun. Especially, going to Disney World with friends. You all will have a great experience to talk about in the future. Reading about why you want to visit Greece is making me want to visit it also. It would be nice to go there to see the landmarks and sights too.

It’s great that your career goals are all planned out! Good luck with your future career!

  12. Hi Bailey!

I'm sure you've been told a thousand times, but it's so cool that you have been able to travel and live in so many different places in the U.S. I can image the stress that has put on you though growing up and not being in a stable place. That's probably why you have such a desire for adventure like hiking and the outdoors. I also image that choosing OU in comparison to your sisters has caused some interesting arguments about who goes to the better school.
I think that you dreams for your career are beautiful. You really seem to know what you want and how to achieve it. I wish you the best of luck with the remainder of this semester and your future ambitions!

  13. Hi Bailey,
Wow, you lived in many places! I always want to travel around, but I have not had a chance to do so. Your puppy is too cute. I just got a Bichon Frise puppy. He is a fluffy white ball of fur. I am admired your passion in your major and your plan for your future in helping veterans. I wish you the best of luck!

  14. Hey Bailey,

As someone who has never moved before coming to college, I'm so jealous of you! I know that there are positives and negatives to moving, but I think it's so cool that you've been able to see so many different parts of the country. Also, baking is an awesome skill. I've got a baker friend and she makes the delicious stuff!

Anyway, best of luck to you!

  15. Hey Bailey!

I think it’s really cool that you’ve gotten to live in so many different places! Washington does seem like a really beautiful place with all the mountains they have. Your dog is so adorable and I love how scruffy he is!

I also enjoy baking but I’m not the best at it, but I love watching the food network haha.

    Good luck with everything!
